Crosscutting issues:

FC will put efforts to address the following cross-cutting issues in all its thematic areas as appropriate.

a)    Gender,

b)    Harmful Traditional Practices(HTP),

c)    Reproductive Health(RH)

d)    HIV/AIDS,

e)   Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR)

Household Food Security and Value Chain Promotion: Aimed at improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers through boosting production/productivity and increasing their participation in the market through promotion of Farmers’ Marketing Organizations by applying the value chain approach. The program is expected to contribute the attainment of food availability and affordability at household level and thereby enhancing child wellbeing, growth and development. Thus, since December 2010 the total number of FMOs has reached 64 with 5608(1147F) members and their working capital is reached more than 3,938,046.19ETB.

The household food security & market promotion thematic area addresses

  • Promotion of Farmers’ Marketing Organization (FMOs)/Seed Multiplication and Marketing Cooperatives (SMMC) and Farmers learning Groups
  • Farm diversification and production enhancement
  • Promotion of small scale irrigation
  • Facilitating linkages of smallholder farmers to chain actors and chain supporters in the value chain development of various commodities
  • Capacity building of farmers to enhance production and productivity through introducing improved farming technology, promote appropriate technologies to enhance production and productivity

Women’s Capacity Enhancement through SHG Approach:This program component is aimed at improving the situation of vulnerable children by ensuring social and economic empowerment of their mothers by facilitating access to economic resources and enhancing their social cohesion through organizing them into women groups (Self Help Groups, cooperatives and micro enterprises). 

The major sub-program components under this are;   

  • Promotion of Women Self Help Group Approach
  • Promotion of Micro Health Insurance Scheme
  • Promotion of Business development and Micro Enterprises
  • Handcraft/ Vocational skill training for women
  • Promoting diversified livelihood options, improved social infrastructure and technological facilities.
  • Ensuring women’s participations in leadership position at the household level as well as community based organizations.
  • Ensuring the commitment and participation of people’s institution to fight practices that affect the lives of children and women.


Child Development, Education and Skill Training: Aimed at enabling children to realize their full potential to earn sustainable livelihoods through access to their basic rights. It deals with access of school age children to formal and alternative educational systems, child protection and enhancing child participation and empowerment. Through the support of FC 62 ABECs are constructed in its 5 projects and in the academic year of 2010 more than 14,447(7,527F) children enrolled. It also deals with supporting youths (rural landless and school dropouts) to have access to demand driven skill trainings for promotion of off –farm and on-farm activities.

The sub-program component includes;

  • Provide Early Childhood Education for children who are between 4 and 6 years age.
  • Support primary schools to provide quality basic education
  • Support to children under difficult circumstances ( Street, orphan and vulnerable children)
  • Promote Integrated Functional Adult Education (IFAE) for women and farmers
  • Community Based Training for unemployed and landless youths
  • Facilitate Special Need Education and inclusive approach for children with disabilities
  • Promote Community Based Child Protection system
  • Promote WASH (CLTs approach)
  • Promote child participation in school and community level
